Put the children first. Communicate openly. Be flexible. Present a united front. Keep the rules consistent between the two homes.

All of it is good advice. All of it requires a second person.

The trap in the standard advice

Cooperative co-parenting is a two-player game. Every instruction in it assumes an ex who will answer a message, keep an agreement, and want the same outcome you want. Hand that instruction set to somebody whose ex does none of those things and you have not given them a strategy. You have given them a way to fail once a week, forever, and to conclude each time that they are the one doing it wrong. Being flexible with someone who exploits flexibility is not generosity. It is a standing invitation.

What the research actually points at

The finding in this field has been stable for decades and it is not the one people expect. What predicts how children do after a separation is not mainly the separation. It is the conflict. A 2020 meta-analysis in Clinical Psychology Review pooled 115 samples covering nearly 25,000 divorced families and went further, asking how the conflict reaches a child. It travels through parenting: hostility, less warmth, less structure, and children pulled into the middle as messengers and confidants. That is a road you can close off from your own side, without your ex agreeing to anything.

A plan is a machine for making decisions in advance

The working half of this guide is a parenting plan written the opposite way to a normal one. Assume no good faith will be available on the day. Assume anything left to be agreed will not be agreed. Then write down the answer now, while nobody is upset. Exact days and times rather than alternate weekends. Holidays named years ahead. Exchanges at the school gate, where you never have to meet. Decisions sorted into three bands, with the joint band kept as small as your order allows, because every item in it is a scheduled argument.

The chapter most guides leave out

High conflict means two people escalating each other. Coercive control means one person systematically running the other, and it commonly intensifies after separation. They produce the same angry messages and the same stack of filings, and they need opposite responses. A guide that hands a survivor a disengage-and-follow-the-plan script has failed the reader most at risk, so this one spends a full chapter and its first toolkit page on telling the two apart and routing accordingly. That boundary is the reason to trust the rest of it.

What you get

A 47-page printable PDF: seven chapters, seven original diagrams, and an eight-piece toolkit built to be printed and written on. A conflict-or-control screener, a clause-by-clause plan builder to take to a lawyer or a mediator, an exchange card for the car, a message filter with Bill Eddy's BIFF method and three worked rewrites, a communication log, a two-house information sheet, a card of answers to the questions children actually ask, and the whole method on one page for the inside of a cupboard door. Every research claim is named, dated and checkable, including the ones that complicate the argument.
